US FDA Samples Harmful Viruses from Frozen Berries

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on May 9, 2019, the US FDA issued a report on the sampling of harmful viruses on frozen berries.

Eating uncooked frozen berries can increase the risk of exposure to harmful viruses. The US FDA reported three outbreaks of hepatitis A virus in the United States from 1997 to 2016 and a norovirus outbreak associated with frozen berries. To protect consumers and ensure food safety, the FDA began sampling these harmful frozen berries.

The US FDA is collecting domestic samples of frozen berries from processing plants, distribution centers, warehouses, and retail outlets, as well as collecting imported samples from ports of entry, importers’ warehouses, or other storage facilities. The US FDA plans to collect and test a total of 2,000 samples.

The sampling results will be published quarterly on the frozen berry distribution page for the 2019/20 fiscal year. The FDA will issue an analysis report after the test is completed.
