Liquid density of lubricating oil is one of the important parameters to determine the quality, measurement and formulation of lubricating oils and is also one of the most commonly used methods for industrial and laboratory quality control. The commonly used methods for measuring the density of lubricating oil are the density meter method (buoyancy method), the pycnometer method and the vibration tube method (U-shaped vibration density meter). According to the characteristics of viscosity, color, sample volume, etc., of the oil to be measured, the appropriate method can be selected for measurement. The measurement shall be carried out at the specified temperature, which is generally 20 ° C and 15 ° C.

Typical Measurement Procedure (Example: Density Meter Method)

1. Instrument Calibration

Use a calibration liquid with a known density (such as distilled water or air conditioning oil), calibrate at 20 ° C and record the calibration factor of the density meter. Check that the instrument error is within ±0.0001 g·cm⁻³.

2. Sample Preparation

Take a sufficient amount of oil sample (≥100 mL) without introducing air bubbles, if the oil viscosity is large, heat it to 40 ° C to improve the fluidity of the sample. Ensure that a clean glass container is used, and the temperature of the container is the same as the measurement temperature.

3. Temperature Equilibration

Place the oil sample in a constant temperature bath or let the temperature probe of the instrument enter the sample, and stabilize the sample temperature at 20 ° C ±0.1 ° C.

4. Measurement

Slowly immerse the density meter into the oil sample, and when the meter reading is stable, read and record the measured value (unit: g·cm⁻³ or kg·m⁻³). If using a digital density meter, the automatically corrected value can be read directly and recorded.

5. Temperature Correction

If the temperature at which the measurement is actually carried out is not 20 ° C, correct the temperature according to the standard temperature coefficient (generally -0.0007 g·cm⁻³/°C), or use the instrument’s built-in temperature correction function.

6. Result Reporting

The report should include: measurement temperature, instrument model, calibration liquid type, measured value, and measurement uncertainty. The typical uncertainty range is ±0.0002 g·cm⁻³ (approximately 0.02%).

API Gravity (commonly used in the petroleum industry):

Typical Density Range: The density of lubricating oils is generally 700–950 kg·m⁻³ (0.70–0.95 g·cm⁻³). It decreases by about 0.0007 g·cm⁻³ for each 1°C increase in temperature.

Precautions and Error Control

Temperature Control

Density is greatly affected by temperature, so it is necessary to measure at the specified temperature or make accurate temperature corrections.

Sample Cleanliness

Avoid introducing water, impurities, and bubbles into the measurement system, which will result in a lower density value than expected.

Instrument Maintenance

Regularly calibrate the density meter or pycnometer to avoid oil stains that affect the measurement.

Viscosity Effects

High-viscosity oils may introduce lag errors when using the buoyancy method. It is recommended to use a vibration tube method or digital density meter and enable viscosity correction features.

Uncertainty Evaluation

Perform uncertainty synthesis based on the Measurement Technical Specifications, and provide the expanded uncertainty (k=2) value in the report.
