High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
HPLC is used to separate, identify, and quantify the active ingredients in health products, such as vitamins and amino acids.
Gas Chromatography (GC)
GC is used to detect organic compounds in health products, such as pesticide residues and volatile organic compounds.
Ultraviolet-Visible Spectrophotometer
UV-Vis Spectrophotometer is used to determine the concentrations of chemical components in health products, such as vitamins and minerals.
Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS)
AAS is used to detect the trace elements and heavy metal contents in health products.
Wu, Jiawei, et al. Analyst 143.21 (2018): 5202-5209.
The illegal adulteration of natural health products with synthetic pharmaceutical drugs poses serious health risks to consumers. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a rapid and accurate detection method.
Sodium alginate (SA)-silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been used as a matrix in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for the determination of sildenafil and rosiglitazone maleate (ROS). Sodium alginate not only acts as a reducing agent to quickly reduce silver ions into AgNPs, but also serves as a capping agent to protect the AgNPs from aggregation. This study also applied the coffee-ring effect to promote the separation and concentration of the analytes. Due to the electromagnetic mechanism, significant SERS enhancement can be obtained on the ring.
Ding, Yanru, et al. Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry 414.27 (2022): 7813-7822.
A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) approach was developed to detect the antihypertensive medications irbesartan (IRB) and doxazosin mesylate (DOX). β-Cyclodextrin-coated silver nanoparticles (CD-AgNPs) were used as the SERS-active substrate. The introduction of hydrophobic cavities of β-CD can capture the drug molecules to form host-guest complexes, bringing the drug molecules closer to the electromagnetic enhancement field of the AgNPs, thereby enhancing the SERS signals of the drug molecules with relatively low Raman cross-sections.
