Comprehensive Deformulation Analysis of a Textile Material for Academic Research

Background & Client Challenge

A university research group specializing in textile materials and polymer science commissioned our laboratory to conduct a comprehensive deformulation analysis of a polyester-based textile sample. The objective was to identify the polymer composition, characterize functional additives, and understand the structural modification strategy used in the textile material.

Modern textile fibers often contain not only primary polymer components but also modified polymers, processing aids, stabilizers, and performance-enhancing additives. In particular, modified polyester fibers may incorporate additional monomers to alter molecular chain regularity, crystallinity, dyeability, and thermal properties. A detailed understanding of these components is essential for academic research involving polymer structure–property relationships and textile material performance. However, accurately distinguishing different polyester components within a complex textile matrix remains challenging because modified polyester and conventional PET share similar molecular structures. The research team required a comprehensive analytical approach capable of providing both compositional information and material structure insights.

Our Solution

To support the client's research objectives, our analytical scientists developed a comprehensive multi-dimensional deformulation analysis workflow integrating multiple advanced characterization techniques.

The textile sample was analyzed using a combination of:

Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) & Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (HNMR): To identify the primary polymer backbones and modified fiber structures.
Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) & Pyrolysis-GCMS (Py-GCMS): To volatilize, separate, and pinpoint trace additives, lubricants, and surfactants.
Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) & Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC): To determine thermal stability, melting points, and weight-percentage profiles of the components.
Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) & High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC): To quantify elemental distributions and separate specific UV stabilizers and dyes.

By combining information obtained from different analytical platforms, our team established a comprehensive chemical profile of the textile sample and provided the research group with reliable compositional insights.

Key Findings & Results

The analytical results demonstrated that the textile sample was primarily composed of polyester-based materials, with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) identified as the dominant polymer component. In addition, several functional additives associated with textile processing and performance enhancement were successfully characterized. The major components identified are summarized below:

Thermal analysis further differentiated the polyester components. The identified PET component showed a melting point of approximately 254.5°C, while the modified polyester PET exhibited a lower melting point of approximately 245.7°C, indicating reduced crystallinity caused by polymer modification. Further structural analysis confirmed that the modified polyester contained copolymer modifications affecting PET chain regularity and thermal properties.

Due to the highly similar molecular structures of PET and modified PET, their relative contents were reported as semi-quantitative values.
