Company to examine ‘validity’ of agency’s test results

Personal care giant Johnson & Johnson has voluntarily recalled a batch of baby powder after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found a type of asbestos in a sample of the product.

The agency’s 18 October announcement indicated that chrysotile asbestos fibres were found in one batch of the product, and advised that consumers should stop using powder from Lot #22318RB.

Its discovery came as part of a survey of around 50 cosmetic products for asbestos fibres, prompted by evidence in 2017 that the carcinogen was contaminating cosmetic products sold by retailers Claire’s and Justice. The agency also sampled another production batch of J&J baby powder, which came up negative for asbestos.
