Crude oil assay is a very comprehensive testing, during which the crude oil sample is distilled in the laboratory under similar conditions as the refinery. Ten or more boiling range fractions are separated, along with the crude oil, will be extensively tested. Sulfur content, nitrogen content, gravity, viscosity measurements, freeze point, pour point, hydrocarbon content and metals content etc. are all tested as part of the normal analysis for the crude oil assay.
