Over-the-air (OTA) testing evaluates the wireless performance of a device by measuring its radio frequency (RF) characteristics in a fully simulated, three-dimensional environment. Unlike traditional conducted testing—which connects the test equipment directly to the device via a coaxial cable—OTA testing evaluates the complete signal path from transmission to reception. This comprehensive evaluation accounts for the combined behavior of the device's antenna system, internal circuitry, device housing, and components. Crucially, OTA testing incorporates the physical effects of typical usage scenarios, such as the proximity of a human head, hand, or full body using specialized phantoms. Inadequate antenna placement, interference from internal processors, or poor material selection for device casings can severely degrade signal propagation. By analyzing how factors like user orientation and spatial conditions affect RF performance, OTA testing allows manufacturers to detect design flaws, eliminate interference, and mitigate drop-call or data-throttling risks early in the product development lifecycle. At Alfa Chemistry, we provide OTA testing service.

| Performance Metric | Description |
|---|---|
| Total Radiated Power (TRP) | Measures the total RF power radiated by a transmitting device in all directions and reflects overall transmitter performance. |
| Total Isotropic Sensitivity (TIS) | Evaluates the receiver's ability to detect and process weak signals across all spatial orientations. |
| Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) | Quantifies the maximum radiated power of directional antenna systems relative to an isotropic radiator. |
| Effective Isotropic Sensitivity (EIS) | Assesses the receiving sensitivity of advanced antenna systems, particularly for beamforming and millimeter-wave applications. |
| Antenna Efficiency | Measures how effectively an antenna converts input power into radiated electromagnetic energy. |
| Radiation Pattern | Characterizes the three-dimensional distribution of radiated RF energy. |
| Throughput Performance | Evaluates end-to-end data transmission performance under realistic network and propagation conditions. |
| Diversity Gain | Measures the performance improvement achieved through multiple antenna configurations. |
| Antenna Correlation | Assesses interaction between multiple antennas in MIMO systems. |
| Beamforming Performance | Evaluates directional transmission and reception capabilities in advanced 5G systems. |
Our laboratories feature state-of-the-art fully and semi-anechoic chambers specifically calibrated for high-precision OTA evaluations. These facilities are equipped with specialized multi-probe systems and high-speed multi-axis positioners that rapidly rotate the Device Under Test (DUT) to map out complex spatial radiation grids in a fraction of the time required by legacy systems. Our chambers seamlessly integrate sophisticated network emulators, channel simulators, and base station simulators capable of reproducing intricate cellular and satellite environments. Furthermore, we deploy standardized SAM phantom heads, artificial hands, and full-body phantoms filled with tissue-simulating liquids to mirror human interaction with smartphones, laptops, medical telemetry devices, and wearables with maximum accuracy.
Comprehensive OTA evaluation provides critical insights into antenna performance, wireless reliability, network connectivity, and overall user experience. Our advanced OTA testing laboratories, experienced wireless engineers, and comprehensive technology coverage enable manufacturers to validate product performance with confidence, meet certification requirements efficiently, and deliver exceptional wireless experiences to customers worldwide.
