The Critical Impact of Moisture on Polymers

Most polymers are processed at high temperatures through injection molding or extrusion. If the moisture content exceeds a specific threshold (often as low as 0.02% for sensitive resins), several detrimental phenomena occur:

• Hydrolysis: At processing temperatures, water chemically reacts with the polymer chains, breaking the covalent bonds. This significantly reduces the molecular weight, leading to a loss of mechanical properties like impact strength and elongation at break.
• Surface Defects: Excess water vaporizes during molding, causing "silver streaks," splay marks, or bubbles on the surface of the finished part.
• Processing Fluctuations: Moisture acts as a plasticizer, altering the melt viscosity. This leads to inconsistent flow rates, fluctuating cycle times, and dimensional instability in the final product.

Why Karl Fischer Over Traditional Methods (Loss-on-Drying (LOD))?

Historically, many laboratories used the loss-on-drying (LOD) method—essentially weighing a sample before and after heating it in an oven or under an infrared lamp. While simple, LOD has a fatal flaw: it measures the total loss of all volatile components, not just water. In modern plastics, additives, residual solvents, and monomers can also volatilize during heating, leading to false-high moisture reading. Conversely, if a skin forms on the pellet during heating, moisture can be trapped inside, leading to a false-low reading. KF titration solves this by utilizing a specific chemical reaction that only interacts with water molecules (H₂O), ensuring that the results are chemically selective and highly reproducible.

Karl Fischer Method

Principle

KF titration is a chemical method specifically designed for the quantitative determination of water. The technique is based on the reaction between water and iodine in the presence of sulfur dioxide and a base (commonly imidazole or pyridine) in a suitable solvent such as methanol. The fundamental reaction can be summarized as follows:

• Water reacts with iodine and sulfur dioxide in the presence of a base and alcohol.
• The amount of iodine consumed is directly proportional to the amount of water present in the sample.

Method Selection: Volumetric vs. Coulometric

Depending on the expected water content of plastic pellets, two KF techniques are used:

• Volumetric KF: Best suited for samples with higher moisture levels (typically 0.1% to 100%). Here, the iodine is added via a precision burette as a titrating solution.
• Coulometric KF: Ideal for trace moisture analysis (1 ppm to 5%). In this method, the iodine is generated electrochemically within the titration cell. It is incredibly sensitive and is the preferred method for the majority of high-performance engineering plastics.

Sample Preparation and Introduction Methods

Plastic pellets cannot be dissolved in standard KF reagents easily, and direct "in-cell" titration is often messy or inaccurate due to the slow release of internal moisture. The most commonly used approach for plastic pellets is the KF oven method, which involves:

• Placing a known mass of plastic pellets into a sealed sample vial
• Heating the sample in a KF oven at a controlled temperature
• Evaporating the moisture from the sample
• Transporting the released water vapor into the titration cell using a dry carrier gas (e.g., nitrogen)
• Quantifying the moisture via coulometric titration

Analytical Procedure

The general procedure for determining moisture in plastic pellets using the KF oven method is as follows:

1. Weighing the Sample: Accurately weigh a representative sample (typically 0.1–2 g) and place it in a sealed vial.
2. Setting the Oven Conditions: Select an appropriate temperature based on the polymer type (e.g., 120–200 °C).
3. Moisture Release and Transfer: Heat the sample to release moisture, which is carried into the titration cell.
4. Titration: The KF titrator automatically detects and quantifies the water content.
5. Data Calculation: Moisture content is calculated as a percentage or in ppm based on sample weight.
