Digestibility refers to the digestible nutrients absorbed by animal digestion in the feed, which are called digestible nutrients, and digestible nutrients account for the percentage of nutrients eaten. Only part of the nutrients that enter the digestive system can be absorbed, which can be determined by digestion tests. Nutritive value is an important quality parameter of feed. After the feed is harvested, its nutrients are digested and absorbed to meet the degree of nutrient and energy needs of the animal body. Specifically, it refers to the content of nutrients and energy in the feed, as well as the digestibility and utilization rate.

The estimation of nutritive value of feeds, includes understanding the feed quality, excavating feed resources to develop unconventional feed and establishing nutritive value of the feed. The quality of feed can be accessed through different aspects, such as the content and utilization efficiency of nutrients.

Digestibility assay is a well-accepted indicator of feed quality. Nowadays, many digestibility assays have been reported, including in vivo and in vitro experiments. However, in vivo testing or feeding trials with live animals or birds is time consuming and costly. Therefore, relatively fast and inexpensive in vitro testing (simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) assays) are desired candidates.
