Rubbers and elastomers are used in nearly every industry for applications ranging from seals, auto tire to medical devices. Elastomers refer to materials with rubber-like properties. Rubbers are divided into natural rubber and synthetic rubber. Natural rubber is an elastomer produced of latex, from the tree Hevea Brasiliensis. Synthetic rubber is a high elastic polymer made from petroleum. The property of most synthetic rubbers is different from that of natural rubbers, but both of them are highly elastic polymer materials and generally have to be subjected to vulcanization and processing before practical use. Although synthetic rubber is generally not as comprehensive as natural rubber in terms of properties, it has high elasticity, insulation, airtightness, oil resistance and high temperature resistance. Elastomers & rubbers are widely used in industry, agriculture, national defense, transportation and daily life.
There are plenty of rubber types, including natural rubber(NR), polyisoprene rubber(IR), styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR), butadiene rubber(BR) for general purpose use, ethylene-propylene rubber(EPM and EPDM), butyl rubber(IIR), chloroprene rubber(CR), acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber or Nitrile rubber(NBR) for special industrial and automotive use and special elastomers such as chlorosulfonated polyethylene, acrylic rubber, silicone rubber, flour silicone rubber, fluor elastomers, urethane rubber, epichlorohydrine rubber, etc. Evaluation a series of properties for various rubber and elastomer materials can be used to predict the durability and performance in final product applications.
With state-of-the-art analytical instruments and experienced experts, Alfa Chemistry can perform standardized testing, customised testing and failure analysis for rubbers and elastomers. As a leader in material characterization, QA/QC, and failure analysis, we have the ability to produce accurate and fast results within the time constraint.
The common failure phenomena for rubbers and elastomers:
Rubber Discoloration | Rubber blooming, rubber yellowing, rubber whitening; rubber blackened; rubber with speckled foreign matter; rubber flecked etc. |
Rubber Deformation | Rubber hardened, poor ductility of rubber, rubber undercure, rubber stickiness, rubber soft, rubber foaming, rubber swelling, rubber layering, rubber aging, rubber pitting, rubber stomata etc. |
Rubber Breakage | Rubber embrittlement, rubber powdered, rubber cracks, rubber lamellar stripping etc. |
