If employees or building occupants are complaining of poor air quality or increased illnesses as colds, flu, asthma, weakness, burning eyes, itching skin, rashes, sore throats, allergies, lethargy, or headaches, which could be related to the buildings.
What Are the Symptoms of Sick Building Syndrome | |
---|---|
Typical seasonal allergy symptoms | Headaches |
Asthma | Loss of coordination |
Persistent cough | Nausea |
Feeling of malaise | Liver damage |
Excessive fatigue | Kidney damage |
Eye irritation | Central nervous system damage |
Nose and throat irritation |
Therefore, when you noticed that you may have a sick building syndrome, you need to know that there must be a problem with the air around you. We all know clean air is considered to be a basic requirement for human health and well-being. Air is a life-sustaining, precious, natural resource. However, every developing society is inevitably burning fossil fuels and emitting harmful chemicals into the atmosphere known as air pollution. Air pollution continues to pose a significant threat to human health worldwide. According to the WHO, there are more than 2 million premature deaths each year caused by pollution via measuring the burden of disease, which can be attributed to the effects of urban outdoor air pollution and indoor air pollution (caused by the burning of solid fuels).
Fig. 1 Relationships among outdoor pollution, indoor pollution, and health effects
Indoor air quality has been increasingly recognized as an important determinant of human health. As levels of outdoor ambient air pollution have decreased throughout the developed world, and because residents of these countries spend the majority of their time indoors, the relative impact of indoor air pollution has increased. To characterize personal exposure to air pollution, indoor air quality must be considered. The indoor air pollutants are as follows:
Category of Pollutant | Indoor Pollution Source |
---|---|
Combustion (e.g., NO2, CO, PM2.5, PAHs) | Secondhand smoke |
Gas stoves, ovens, heaters, and fireplaces | |
Wood smoke (stoves, fireplaces) | |
Kerosene heaters | |
Candles and incense | |
Building materials (e.g., formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds) | Plywood |
Particle board | |
Carpeting | |
Paints | |
Cleaning materials (e.g., ammonia gas, chlorine gas, choramine) | Bleach, ammonia, detergents |
Air quality is mainly evaluated in three aspects:
In order to provide customers with a perfect test report, Alfa Chemistry offers the most advanced measuring methods and instruments to identify the air quality around you. We offer but not limited to benzopyrene, carbon monoxide, lead, total suspended particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide detection and quantifications. We possess versatile detection instruments such as:
Instrument | Introduction |
---|---|
TGA | Thermal Gravity Analysis (TGA) is a method of thermal analysis in which the mass of a sample is measured over time as the temperature changes. This measurement provides information about physical phenomena, such as phase transitions, absorption and desorption; as well as chemical phenomena including chemisorptions, thermal decomposition, and solid-gas reactions. |
GC-MS | The combination of gas chromatography, one of the most powerful separation techniques, with mass spectrometry, one of the most powerful and versatile detectors, has lead to the most powerful and versatile analytical technique, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The former to separate a complex mixture into its components and the latter to deduce the atomic weights of those components. It is particularly useful in identifying organic compounds. |
HPLC | HPLC is an efficient method of liquid–solid column chromatography. Using a stationary phase composed of small (3–10 μm) beads increases separation efficiency but requires pumps to force the mobile phase through the column at pressures >300 bar. Unlike gas chromatography, the composition of the mobile phase is often varied with time while the column temperature is held constant. HPLC is suited for coupling with different detectors, particularly in so-called hyphenated techniques, such as HPLC coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS). |
TOF-MS | Time-of-flight mass spectrometry is a method of mass spectrometry in which an ion's mass-to-charge ratio is determined via a time of flight measurement. The kinetic energy of an ion of mass m is given by mv2/2, so a measurement of its speed v by timing the flight of the ion over a given path determines the mass when the kinetic energy is known, or when the spectrometer has been suitably calibrated. In addition, interest has shifted to the measurement of compounds of larger mass, for which TOF methods are especially well suited. |
Alfa Chemistry is professional in environmental analytical testing and research services. We can provide accurate and reliable test results within the time constraint. We have conducted Benzene/Formaldehyde VOC monitoring, indoor air pollutant testing, mold/asbestos in air testing, VOC identification and quantification for different air quality studies. Please feel free to contact us if you have any concern or would like us to perform any air quality testing.
