Description

Apigenin has been used by humans in the form of plant extracts to treat many diseases and inflammatory conditions until it was discovered to be a core compound. Apigenin, chemically known as 4', 5, 7,-trihydroxyflavone, is a natural product of the flavone class. As one of the best known flavonoids, apigenin has a myriad of nutritional and organoleptic characteristics. In addition, it has low intrinsic toxicity and remarkable effects on normal versus cancer cells. With interesting pharmacological activities and nutraceutical potential, apigenin has received special attention in recent years as a potential health promoting agent.

Pharmacological Properties

  • Antidiabetic Activity

The antidiabetic effect of apigenin may be due to its ability to inhibit α-glucosidase activity, increase insulin secretion, interact with and neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cell, which together contribute to the prevention of diabetic complications [1].

  • Anti-Cancer Activity

In recent years, apigenin has been increasingly recognized as a cancer chemopreventive agent. It inhibits a wide range of human cancers in vitro and in vivo through a variety of biological effects, such as induction of cell cycle arrest triggering, cell apoptosis and autophagy, invasion and inhibition of cell migration, and stimulation of immune responses [2].

  • Antiviral Activity

Like quercetin, rutin and other flavonoids, apigenin has antiviral activity. According to statistics, it can inhibit a variety of viruses, including but not limited to herpes simplex virus HSV-1 and HSV-2, enterovirus 71 (EV71), influenza virus, hepatitis C virus, hand, foot, and mouth disease virus, and African swine fever virus (ASFV) [3].

  • Anti-Inflammatory Activity

Apigenin is a very effective anti-inflammatory agent. It acts as a protective agent in a variety of diseases by inhibiting key inflammatory mediators, signaling pathways and molecules.

  • Antioxidant Activity

Apigenin has antioxidant activity that helps neutralize free radicals in the body. This antioxidant capacity is thought to contribute to overall cellular health and may play a role in reducing oxidative stress.
