Active Ingredient Analysis

Plant extracts generally have very complex components, and the composition and content of the active ingredients may be affected by a variety of factors, including the type of extraction process used, the growing region of the plant, the age and part of the plant used, and the season in which the plant was harvested. As these complex active ingredients play an important role in realizing the functions of plant extracts. Therefore, there is a need for their accurate qualitative and quantitative determination.

As an expert in natural product research and development, Alfa Chemistry is capable of providing services for active ingredient analysis of plant extracts. We are committed to meeting the needs of all industries in the development and utilization of active ingredients from natural plants.

Active Ingredient Analysis

Our Technologies

Our active ingredient analysis technologies for plant extracts are mainly as follows:

Spectrometry

  • Ultraviolet visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis): In this method, the absorbance of the sample is measured within the wavelength of 190-800 nm, which is used for qualitative and quantitative identification. It is one of the rapid tests used to determine the total flavonoid content in plant extracts.
  • Infrared spectrometry (IR): IR gives information about the structure of all the chemical components in the sample.
  • Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR): NMR provides information on the number and type of chemical functional groups in a molecule, often used for structural characterization of unknown active ingredients in plant extracts.

Chromatography

  • Thin layer chromatography (TLC): TLC is a chromatographic separation technique used to separate and identify the chemical constituents of a sample. It has a wide range of applications in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of active ingredients in plant extracts.
  • High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC): HPLC can be used to identify polyphenols, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids and other compounds as well as peptides, polysaccharides and other biomolecules in plant extracts.
  • Gas chromatography (GC): GC can be used for the determination of fatty acids, organic acids, plant essential oils, etc. in plant extracts, especially in the identification of plant essential oils play an important role.

Chromatography-mass spectrometry

Chromatography-mass spectrometry is a technique that combines chromatography and mass spectrometry to separate different active ingredients in plant extracts by chromatography, and then qualitatively and quantitatively detect the separated active ingredients by mass spectrometry.

Other methods

Other methods for qualitative and quantitative analysis of active ingredients in plant extracts include electrochemical analysis, capillary electrophoresis, near-infrared spectroscopy, single-crystal diffraction, and multiple techniques combined.
