Applications of Plant Extracts in Agriculture Industry

The applications of plant extracts in the agricultural industry are mainly as follows.

  • As herbicides

Many plant extracts have been reported to possess herbicidal activity. They act through different modes of action. For example, certain plant extracts have special functions such as disrupting cell membranes, destroying essential enzymes in plant tissues and inhibiting amino acid synthesis. These properties make them potentially useful as bioherbicides.

  • As pesticides

Pesticides of plant origin were widely used in subsistence and commercial agriculture for thousands of years before the advent of synthetic pesticides. Many plant extracts have been reported to exhibit high efficacy against a wide range of pests and diseases, multiple mechanisms of action and low toxicity to non-target organisms.   • As biostimulants
