Pharmaceutical

The use of plants and plant extracts for medical purposes has been going on for thousands of years. Plant extracts are complex substrates rich in specific metabolites that possess a range of different biological activities. Therefore, plant extracts can be used for the prevention and treatment of various diseases. Examples include digitalis (extracted from foxglove) for the treatment of heart disease, ergotamine (extracted from contaminated rye) for the treatment of migraine headaches, and quinine (extracted from cinchona) for the treatment of malaria. Diverse therapeutic applications can be achieved by different plant extracts, including cancer, diabetes, depression, microbial infections, etc.

Applications of Plant Extracts in Pharmaceuticals

Applications of plant extracts in pharmaceuticals are mainly as follows.

  • As anticancer drugs

Plant extracts provide a vital source for the development of novel and effective anticancer drugs. Their value lies in the possibility of obtaining complex molecular structures with anticancer activity that are difficult to synthesize in the laboratory. To date, a variety of plant extract active ingredients have been used in clinical anticancer drugs, including vincristines, taxanes, podophyllotoxin, and camptothecin.

  • As antidiabetic drugs

Many plant extracts have been reported to possess antidiabetic activity. They act by increasing insulin secretion, improving glucose uptake by adipose and muscle tissues, and reducing glucose production in liver cells. Flavonoids, phenolic compounds, coumarins, terpenoids are the most common antidiabetic active ingredients in plant extracts.

  • As anti-depression drugs

Depression is caused by decreased levels of monoamine neurotransmitters in the brain, such as norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. Some plant extract active ingredients can restore these monoamine levels in the brain by inhibiting monoamine oxidase or inhibiting the reuptake of these neurotransmitters, resulting in an antidepressant effect. Research has found that many plant extracts have antidepressant activity comparable to clinically effective synthetic antidepressants, such as Hypericum extract, Centella asiatica extract, and turmeric extract.
