Luteolin, 3', 4', 5, 7-tetrahydroxyflavone, is a common flavonoid found in many types of plants, including fruits, vegetables, and medicinal herbs. Chemically, luteolin has a C6-C3-C6 structure, including two benzene rings and an oxygen-containing ring with a C2-C3 carbon double bond. Structure-activity studies have shown that the presence of hydroxyl moieties at carbons 5, 7, 3' and 4' positions of the luteolin structure and the presence of the 2-3 double bond are responsible for its multiple pharmacological effects ^[1]. Luteolin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anticancer, neuroprotective and other biological effects, and can function as an antioxidant or a pro-oxidant biochemically.

Luteolin can block cancer development in vitro and in vivo by inhibition of proliferation of tumor cells, protection from carcinogenic stimuli, and activation of cell cycle arrest, and by inducing apoptosis through different signaling pathways ^[2].
