Osthole, 7-methoxy-8-(3-methyl-2-butenyl) coumarin, is a bioactive simple coumarin derivative extracted from many medicinal plants. It is mainly distributed in 14 species of Umbelliferae and 17 species of Rutaceae. It has also been found in some species of Leguminosae and Compositae. The results of in vitro and in vivo experiments show that osthole has a variety of pharmacological effects, including anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, osteogenic, cardiovascular protective, antimicrobial and anti-parasitic.
