Application
Ytterbium is integral to advancements in fiber amplifier and fiber optic technologies, playing a crucial role in various lasing applications. This versatile metal increases in electrical resistance under high stress, making it ideal for stress gauges used in monitoring ground deformations from seismic events and nuclear explosions. As a dopant, ytterbium enhances the grain refinement, strength, and mechanical properties of stainless steel, proving useful in both industrial and niche dental applications. Additionally, it contributes to thermal barrier system bond coatings on substrates like nickel and iron. Ytterbium-169 is significant as a radiation source for portable X-ray machines and is utilized in nuclear medicine. Though commercial use is limited, ytterbium shows promise in forming strong steel alloys, its oxides being instrumental in laser production and synthetic gemstone creation. Further, it serves in phosphors, ceramic capacitors, ferrite devices, pulsed lasers, and catalysts, and facilitates thin film preparations in Physical Vapor Deposition processes.
