Application
Tin(II) oxide serves multiple purposes, primarily functioning as a reducing agent while also playing a crucial role in the preparation of stannous salts. This dark crystalline substance, known for its characteristic odor, is typically found in the form of brownish-black powder or black to blue-black solid crystals. Although insoluble in water, it can dissolve in acids, alkalis, and slightly in ammonium chloride. While Tin(II) oxide is unstable in air due to gradual oxidation to tin(IV) oxide, it becomes incandescent when oxidized at 300°C. Additionally, it finds use as a soft abrasive and is integral to the manufacture of copper ruby glass and applications involving UV light illumination. It is important to note that Tin(II) oxide is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and can react with both acids and strong bases.
