Application
Iron(II) sulfate hydrate serves as an important compound primarily utilized to prepare ferrous ion solutions. Its unique composition, consisting mainly of FeSO4.H2O with a small presence of FeSO4.4H2O, renders it more resistant to oxidation and more convenient for storage compared to its crystalline counterpart. This off-white to beige powder, characterized by an astringent odor, is employed in studies exploring the effects of iron ions on the thermal decomposition behavior of hydroxylamine/water solutions. Its aqueous solution remains acidic and turbid, forming a yellow-brown precipitate over time. In humid conditions, it converts to a heptahydrate by absorbing water. Notably, it retains its hydration upon heating to 120 ℃ and becomes an alkali sulfate when boiled with water. This compound dissolves slowly in cold water but rapidly when heated, while remaining insoluble in ethanol and nearly insoluble in 50% sulfuric acid, making it a versatile tool in various scientific investigations.
