Each year, more than 400 million tons of plastic are produced by people. Plastic does not biodegrade, so it deteriorates over time into ever-tinier fragments. They are referred to as microplastics. Future environmental pollution issues with microplastics are growing more prevalent and significant.
Alfa Chemistry provides laboratory microplastics analysis services for the identification and measurement of microplastics in samples (such as water, soil, and sludge) for environmental research and product development optimization to reduce the release of microplastics into goods or the environment.
Microplastics in Water Testing Options from Alfa Chemistry
Concerns about microplastics in water are developing. Per liter of water, researchers discovered thousands of microplastic particles. Questions and worries about the potential impact of microplastics in drinking water on people have been raised by the discovery of microplastics in treated tap water and bottled water.
To quantify the presence of microplastics in water samples, Alfa Chemistry can assist with the analysis.
The most typical sample matrices used in microplastic testing are various types of water.
Quantification of microplastics in water, soil or sludge
In order to discover contaminated rivers, lakes, or seas, we can screen plastic particles from natural waters. We identify microplastics in water or soil using Raman spectroscopy. The analysis will categorize various polymer kinds according to size, such as 1-10 µm, 10-100 µm and 100-1000 µm.
Suitable samples: Clean water, soil, sludge.
Minimum sample size: 1 L (water) or 500 grams (soil). Add foil between the plastic cap and sample container to avoid contamination.
Analysis of Microplastics in Clean Water Samples
In order to reduce the number of particles in the finished product, we also analyze the production and packaging of bottled water. We identify 8 common plastic kinds (PE, PP, PS, PVC, PET, PC, PMMA, and PA6) using py-GC/MS.
Suitable samples: Clean water only.
Minimum sample size: 1 L.
Microplastics Analysis in Typical Wastewater Samples
Wastewater microplastics analysis typically focuses on optimizing filtration systems to reduce plastic leakage into the environment. We can distinguish between eight popular plastic kinds (PE, PP, PS, PVC, PET, PC, PMMA, and PA6) using py-GC/MS data.
Suitable samples: Only for typical turbid water and wastewater samples.
Minimum sample volume: 1 L.
Microplastics on Filters
Small filters for washing machines to filters for huge containers are all testable systems for this service. We use Raman to directly analyze the microplastics in the filters.
Suitable samples: Filters
Alfa Chemistry's Technical Expertise in Microplastics Testing
Alfa Chemistry has extensive technical expertise using the following methods:
Optical microscopy
Infrared microscopy
Raman microscopy
Scanning Electron Microscopy/EDX
For the purpose of identifying and quantifying the presence of microplastics in particular samples, we combine the application of these methods with a professional evaluation. Other products like tap water, drinking water, honey, salt, drinks, beer, and spirits are all subject to the same analysis.
In the field of environmental analysis on a global scale, Alfa Chemistry is a top provider of testing and analytical services. We can assist you in putting into practice a thorough environmental safety policy and observing local, national, and international laws.
