Why Wafer Testing Is Necessary

Early Defect Detection to Improve Yield

Wafer fabrication is complex, involving hundreds of process steps such as ion implantation, photolithography, chemical vapor deposition, etching, and metallization. Any deviation, such as contamination, line-width variation, CMP defect, or dielectric breakdown, may cause device malfunction. Testing at wafer level allows detection of defects before the wafer is diced and packaged. Early failure identification dramatically reduces waste and helps optimize process parameters.

Cost Reduction in Back-End Packaging

Back-end packaging contributes significantly to total semiconductor cost. Packaging a defective die is economically pointless. Wafer probing (known as Wafer Sort or WAT wafer acceptance test) screens dies and marks passing units before packaging. Only "Known Good Dies" (KGD) enter packaging, minimizing cost exposure.
