Nanozymes are one kind of nanomaterials with intrinsic enzyme-like characteristics. Due to the nanozymes are man-made and engineered on demand, they offer several advantages in terms of stability, recyclability, and cost. Unlike natural enzymes that only function within a specific temperature and pH range, nanozymes are able to withstand harsh conditions and allow long-lasting, safe and stable storage. Nanozymes have flourished in the past decade and have been widely used in fields such as medicine, chemical industry, food, environment, etc. Along with the rapid development and ever-deepening understanding of nanoscience and nanotechnology, nanozymes hold promise to serve as direct surrogates of traditional enzymes by mimicking and further engineering the active centers of natural enzymes.

In 2007, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were found to have intrinsic peroxidase-mimicking activity, and since that time, hundreds of nanomaterials have been found to mimic the enzyme catalytic activity. Uniquely, a broad variety of nanomaterials simultaneously exhibit dual-enzyme or multi-enzyme mimetic activities. According to their different catalytic activities, nanozymes can be divided into nanozymes with peroxidase (POD) activity, catalase (CAT) activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, glucose oxidase (GOD) activity and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity.
