Vitamin K1 is a fat-soluble polycyclic aromatic ketone that serves as a cofactor in the formation of coagulation factors II (prothrombin), VII, IX, and X, as well as the anticoagulants protein C and protein S. It also functions as a cell signaling factor. Vitamin K1 is essential for blood coagulation, bone, and vascular metabolism. The most important source of vitamin K in the human diet is phylloquinone, found in green leafy vegetables and vegetable oils. |
