Biochem Physiol Actions Tryptophan (Trp), a heterocyclic compound, is an essential amino acid involved in growth, reproduction, and immunity. Increasing the availability of tryptophan is necessary for regulating mood, cognition, and behavior. Brain uptake of tryptophan depends on the ratio of Trp to all other macromolecular neutral amino acids in plasma. A higher ratio indicates greater Trp uptake.
