Noble Metal Nanozymes

Noble metal nanozymes include noble metal elemental nanozymes (such as Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Ru nanozyme) and noble metal alloy nanozymes (such as PtRu nanozyme, PdPtAu nanozyme). They are currently hot research materials in the field of nanobiomedicine, which have special optical properties, good chemical stability, multiple enzyme-like activities and good biocompatibility. In addition, noble metal nanozymes can also form composite nanomaterials with other nanomaterials to enhance their enzyme-like activity and make them more widely used. At present, noble metal nanozymes have been used in many fields of biomedicine.

Applications

As a class of multifunctional nanozymes, noble metal nanozymes have broad application prospects in the fields of biosensing, antibacterial, cancer treatment and environmental treatment.

  • Biosensing. In the field of biosensing, noble metal nanozymes can be used to detect ions in food, drinking water, drugs, and industrial wastewater, such as mercury ions, silver ions, lead ions, copper ions, and iodine ions. Noble metal nanozymes are also used for the detection of small molecules such as hydrogen peroxide, dopamine, glucose, xanthine, cholesterol, lactic acid and uric acid. In addition, noble metal nanozymes can also be used for the detection of nucleic acids, proteins (such as prostate-specific antigen, thrombin), cells (such as human chronic myeloid leukemia cells) and viruses (such as respiratory syncytial virus, mumps virus).

  • Antibacterial. Noble metal nanozymes can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can effectively kill bacteria. They have good antibacterial properties against drug-resistant bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria (such as Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (such as Staphylococcus aureus).
  • Cancer treatment. Noble metal nanozymes are a potential class of antitumor therapeutic materials. The POD-like activity, photosensitization properties and local photothermal effect of noble metal nanozymes can be used to alleviate hypoxia in tumor sites and achieve photothermal and photodynamic killing of tumor cells.

  • Environmental treatment. Noble metal nanozymes can also be used in environmental treatment. They can degrade many organic pollutants. For example, Shao et al. reduced noble metal nanozyme Au nanoparticles onto the surface of CuS nanoplates in situ to prepare Au/CuS nanocomposite with peroxidase-like activity. The Au/CuS nanocomposite can catalyze H2O2 to produce ·OH with strong oxidizing properties, thereby oxidatively degrading the organic pollutant rhodamine 6G[1].
