Nanozymes With GOD-like Activity

Introduction

Nanozymes With GOD-like Activity

Nanozymes with glucose oxidase (GOD)-like activity have the ability to activate oxygen to produce gluconic acid and H2O2. Among them, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are widely used as GOD mimics, providing new tools for glucose detection. In addition, some gold-containing bimetallic nanoparticles or nanocomposites have also been developed, which usually have higher GOD-like activity.

Study On Catalytic Mechanism

Research on the catalytic mechanism of nanozymes with GOD-like activity mainly focuses on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which can catalyze glucose to generate gluconic acid and H2O2 in the presence of O2. In 2006, Rossi and colleagues proposed the mechanism of molecular activation for AuNPs catalysis on the basis of the promoting effect of alkali as well as the generation of H2O2. The catalytic mechanism is shown in Figure 1. The interaction of hydrated glucose anion with gold surface atoms could form electron-rich gold species, activating molecular oxygen by nucleophilic attack efficiently. The Au+-O2 or Au2+-O22− couples of the dioxogold intermediate could serve as the bridge to transform electrons from glucose to dioxygen. In this way, the gluconic acid and H2O2 were formed finally[1].

Applications

In recent years, a wide variety of nanozymes with GOD-like activity have been developed for application in the colorimetric detection of glucose. Additionally, they can also detect serum glucose in clinical samples. For example, small AuNPs (~3.5 nm) are possessed intrinsic GOD-like activity. Combining them with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can achieve simple colorimetric detection of glucose and serum glucose[2].
