Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based nanozymes have become an important research branch in the field of nanoenzymology. The regular arrangement of their metal nodes and organic ligands offers abundant catalytic sites with remarkable enzyme-like activities. And their porous structure and multiple channels can facilitate the entry of small molecule substrates to fully contact with the active sites, and subsequently benefits the transport as well as diffusion of products. In addition, MOFs-based nanozymes also have the characteristics of high surface area, easy preparation, low cost as well as high stability, which make them promising in diverse applications.

Applications

MOFs-based nanozymes exhibit great application potential in the fields of sensing, environmental treatment and diseases treatment.

  • Sensing. Among many analytical strategies, the simple and ingenious sensing method may be a better choice than the time-consuming, tedious and expensive chromatography (such as HPLC LC / MS). The great majority of MOFs-based nanozymes can be employed to sensing heavy metal ions as well as biomolecules such as hydrogen peroxide, uric acid, thiamine, glucose, cholesterol, cysteine, 17β-estradiol, acid phosphatase, inorganic pyrophosphatase, etc.

  • Environmental treatment. MOFs-based nanozymes can not only adsorb pollutants, but also realize chemical oxidation degradation of pollutants, so they are used in environmental treatment. MOFs-based nanozymes can be used to degrade phenolic compounds and dyes such as methylene blue (MB). In addition, MOF-based nanozyme can be widely used in water treatment with various PH.
  • Diseases treatment. MOFs-based nanozymes have good biocompatibility, making it possible to be used in vivo, which attracts their application in diseases treatment. MOFs-based nanozymes can be used for photodynamic therapy (PDT), radiation therapy (RT), starvation therapy and microwave-enhanced dynamic therapy (MEDT) of tumors. In addition, MOFs-based nanozymes can also be used to treat inflammation and promote diabetic wound healing.
