Copper-based nanozymes are enzymatically active nanomaterials containing a certain proportion of copper. Copper-based nanozymes have attracted widespread attention and research from scientists because of their advantages of simple preparation, low cost, high activity, good stability and good biocompatibility. Currently, a large number of copper-based nanozymes have been developed and utilized. Utilizing their peroxidase-like activity and ability to generate free radicals, they can effectively kill tumor cells. In addition, copper-based nanozymes can catalyze the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the bacteria to achieve effective sterilization.

Applications

Copper-based nanozymes can be used for tumor therapy and antibacterial.

  • Tumor therapy. Copper-based nanozymes enable self-enhanced nanocatalytic tumor therapy (NCT). Their tumor therapy strategies include tumor microenvironment (TME) responsive therapy, chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), immunotherapy, and tumor imaging. Copper-based nanozymes can also achieve synergistic therapeutic effects with multiple therapies for tumors.

  • Antibacterial. Copper-based nanozymes have efficient bactericidal effects. They can mimic the structure and properties of enzymes and destroy bacterial structures by generating reactive oxygen species in large quantities. As a new type of antibacterial agent, copper-based nanozymes have good antibacterial effects against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in vivo and in vitro, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus albicans and periodontitis-related bacteria represented by anaerobic Porphyromonas gingivalis.
