Cobalt-Based Nanozymes

Introduction

Cobalt-Based Nanozymes

The cobalt-based nanozyme is a kind of nanozyme with high catalytic activity. They have peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme catalytic activities, and can scavenge excess reactive oxygen species (ROS). They also have good biocompatibility and stability. Benefiting from this, cobalt-based nanozymes can be used for anti-inflammation and biosensing. Besides, cobalt is an essential trace element for human body and cobalamin is an important component of vitamin B12. Therefore, cobalt-based nanozymes can also provide cobalt source for the synthesis of vitamin B12.

Applications

Cobalt-based nanozymes show broad prospects in the fields of anti-inflammation and biosensing.

  • Anti-inflammation. Cobalt-based nanozymes can exert ROS-scavenging activity, thereby alleviate the progression of inflammation related diseases. They are used to treat colitis, acute inflammation and to promote ultra-fast healing of inflammatory wounds. For example, Chen et al. proposed a cobalt-based nanozyme with high catalytic activity, cobalt hydroxide oxide nanosheets (Co NSs), which could function as a broad-spectrum ROS scavenger. Co NSs could inhibit the assembly and activation of inflammasome. And Co NSs exhibit excellent anti-inflammatory capacity in both bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) and mouse models of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced systemic inflammation and dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis[1].

  • Biosensing. Cobalt-based nanozymes have excellent multienzyme mimetic activities, and are widely used in the field of biosensing. They can be used for the detection of hydrogen peroxide, glutathione, acid phosphatase, etc. In addition, cobalt-based nanozymes can analyze and detect serum, water, health products, cosmetics and environmental samples.
