Cerium-Based Nanozymes

Introduction

Cerium-Based Nanozymes

Cerium-based nanozymes are mature nanozymes. Due to their excellent catalytic activity, cerium-based nanozymes have received widespread attention. They possess a variety of enzyme-mimetic activities, including superoxide oxidase, catalase, and oxidase. In addition, cerium-based nanozymes also have antioxidant properties and are of great value and significance for the treatment of various diseases.

Applications

In recent years, cerium-based nanozymes, especially cerium oxide nanozyme, have been widely used in the treatment of various diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders, retinal diseases, diabetes, etc.

  • Treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. Cerium-based nanozymes are used to treat many neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), ischemic stroke, etc. For example, cerium oxide nanozymes can scavenge excess reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby alleviating PD and preventing ischemic stroke.

Treatment of retinal diseases
  • Treatment of retinal diseases. Retinal diseases refer to changes in the retina under the influence of various factors, such as hemorrhage, exudation, increased number of abnormal cells, or edema. Cerium-based nanozymes could be used to treat retinal diseases. For example, cerium oxide nanozyme are used to treat pigmentary retinopathy. They protect the retina by decreasing ROS, upregulating the expression of neuroprotection-associated genes, downregulating apoptosis signaling pathways and/or upregulating survival signaling pathways to slow photoreceptor degeneration[1].
  • Treatment of diabetes. Cerium-based nanozymes have significant antioxidant properties, leading to their application in diabetes treatment. Biomarkers of diabetes can be improved through cerium-based nanozyme treatment, including oxidative stress, energy compensation (ADP/ATP), lipid profile, and hepatic ROS levels. In addition, cerium-based nanozymes can also be used for diabetic wound treatment.
