Description
Ginsenoside Rk1 (G-Rk1) is a unique saponin component isolated from heat processed Panax ginseng Meyer. It also can be derived from ginsenoside Rg3 by dehydration or heating processes.
Ginsenoside Rk1 has a variety of pharmacological and therapeutic effects such as anticancer effects, antiplatelet aggregation activity, cognitive function enhancement, anti-inflammatory effects, reduction of lipid accumulation, antioxidant effects, anti-insulin resistance, prevention of arthritis in humans and nephrotoxicity, etc. Its bioactivities and mechanism of actions are summarized in Fig 1 [1]. Specially, Ginsenoside Rk1 protects human melanocytes from H2O2-induced oxidative injury via regulation of the PI3K/AKT/Nrf2/HO-1 pathway; it induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 triple negative breast cancer cells; it has an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting NF-κB levels in the in vitro models.
