Description
Ginsenoside Rh2 (G‑Rh2) is a natural bioactive product derived from Panax ginseng Meyer. Currently, commercially available Ginsenoside Rh2 is mainly produced via deglycosylating of major protopanaxadiol (PPD)-type ginsenosides isolated from the ginseng plant by chemical or biotransformation methods.
Ginsenoside Rh2 has a variety of biological activities such as anticancer chemotherapeutic, anti-metastatic, neuroprotective, cognition enhancing, anti-inflammatory, anti-osteoporotic, antioxidative, and anti-diabetic activities. Specially, Ginsenoside Rh2 exerts anticancer effects by inducing apoptosis, autophagy, cell cycle blockade and immunity, reversing drug resistance, and inhibiting proliferation, invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis. Figure 1 shows its possible anticancer mechanisms [1]. In addition, ginsenoside Rh2 in combination with chemotherapeutic drugs can reverse drug resistance and enhance drug sensitivity in various cancer types. Furthermore, it decreases the release of IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, PGE2, and NO and suppresses phosphorylation of p38 MAPK, ERK1/2, JAK, and NF-κB. And it induces β-cell proliferation by activating Akt and PDX-1, improves glucose tolerance, and increases insulin levels in animal models.
