Description

Ginsenoside Rg1 is a most active and abundant steroid saponins isolated from traditional herbal medicines (for example, stems, leaves and roots of panax ginseng and Panax notoginseng, see figure 1) ^[1] , sharing structural similarity with other steroid hormones.

Ginsenoside Rg1 exerts multiple biological activities including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-aging, anti-fibrotic, anticancer, antithrombotic, anti-allergic, immunomodulatory, cardioprotective, and pro-angiogenic activities via various mechanisms. For instance, Xie ^[1] et al. summarized the protective effects of G-Rg1 against cerebral ischemia and reperfusion injury in addition to the mechanisms underlying these effects mainly in the following mechanisms showed in figure 1. In addition, ginsenoside Rg1 inhibits the activation of astrocytes and the production of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β; it also decreases the levels of ALT, AST, LDH, and ALP, and decreases fibrosis. Additionally, ginsenoside Rg1 inhibits the JAK2/STAT5 signaling pathway, upregulates the expression of Bax and caspase 3, and so on.
