Description
Ginsenoside Rb3 (G-Rb3) is a triterpene saponin originally found in species of Panax (ginseng), specially relatively richer in panax notoginseng, panax quinquefolius, panax ginseng, etc. G-Rb3 possesses 1 xylose and 3 glucose moieties with 20(S)-protopanaxadiol (PPD) aglycone.
According to the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of ginsenosides, the pentose structure of Ginsenoside Rb3 restricts itself to some extent from having more pharmacological activities. However, several pharmacokinetics have shown that Ginsenoside Rb3 could be potential substitute medicines for diverse diseases, including not limited to anticonvulsant, anti-diabetic, and antitumor, but also neural and cardiovascular protective effects (see figure 1) [1]. For instance, Ginsenoside Rb3 exerts cardio-protective effect through inhibiting mitochondria mediated apoptosis and up-regulating energy metabolism, especially fatty acid oxidation. The potential protective mechanism of Ginsenoside Rb3 may be involved in the activation of upstream PPARα regulators.
