Description
Ginsenoside F2 (G-F2) is a minor saponin extracted from natural ginseng, but in low quantities. Therefore, ginsenoside F2 production predominantly relies on biotransformation from major PPD (protopanaxadiol) -type saponins (e.g., Rb1, Rb2, Rb3, and Rc).
Ginsenoside F2 exerts multiple biological activities including anti-obesity and anticancer chemotherapeutic activities. For instance, Ginsenoside F2 decreases lipid accumulation, inhibits the expression of adipokines, including PPARγ, FASN, and Adipoq, and increases the phosphorylation of ACC and AMPK in vitro and in vivo. Ginsenoside F2 also alleviates oxidative stress in the liver of obese mice by reducing SOD and GSH-Px expressions. Therefore, it has potential as a nutraceutical to treat obesity. It also induces acidic vesicle formation, autophagy and mitochondrial apoptosis in breast cancer stem cells; furthermore, it inhibits tumor growth in an animal model of glioblastoma.
