Ginsenoside Extract Extends Lifespan and Health Span in Caenorhabditis Elegans
With a compact neural circuit consisting of entirely mapped 302 neurons, Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is a free-living nematode that has been extensively utilized as an animal model for research involving aging and neurodegenerative diseases.
Ginsenoside, as one of the main active substances of ginseng, has a variety of biological functions and health benefits. For example, it also plays an important role in antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotection and improvement of mitochondrial function. Total ginsenosides (TGS) extract is a mixture of the main active saponins of ginseng, which have been shown to extend lifespan and health span in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Wang [1] et al. investigated the effect of TGS on the survival rate of C. elegans using wild type N2 worms at different developmental stages, and the results showed that TGS-mediated lifespan extension plays a direct role in C. elegans, rather than indirectly affecting the bacterium. In addition, TGS treatment significantly improved age-related mobility, muscle fiber organization, lipofuscin accumulation, and enhanced resistance under oxidative stress. Importantly, the molecular mechanism of TGS may be dependent on the SKN-1, SIR 2.1, and DAF-16 signal pathways.
