Graphene is a two-dimensional network in which sp2-hybridized carbon (C) atoms are arranged in two different triangular sub-lattices[1]. The physical and chemical properties of graphene may be significantly altered by doping nitrogen (N) atoms. On this basis, N-doped graphene aerogels have been widely studied by scientists in various fields, and have proved to be promising materials for environmental remediation and energy storage.

  • Organic pollutant removal

Ren et al[2]. fabricated the N-doped graphene aerogels by using graphene oxide and melamine via the hydrothermal self-assembly and thermal annealing process. The aerogels showed excellent adsorption capacity for organic solvents, and adsorption recyclability. So, N-doped graphene aerogels would be promising materials for removing organic pollutants from water.

Similar to S or P-doped graphene aerogels, N-doped graphene aerogels also exhibit great potential as electrode materials for supercapacitors. For example, Chen and co-workers[3] synthesized hierarchical porous N-doped graphene aerogels with good wettability by a one-step hydrothermal method using graphene oxide as a precursor and urea phosphate as a nitrogen dopant and hydroxyl group protector. Wettability between electrode materials and ionic liquid electrolytes is key to improving the performance of electrode materials for supercapacitors. Therefore, N-doped graphene aerogels play an extremely important role in the research of energy storage materials.
