Honey Authenticity Testing Service

In order to meet consumers' expectations, minimize the risk of food fraud, and ensure that the honey products of various enterprises comply with the laws and regulations of the destination country or region, Alfa Chemistry has developed a honey authenticity testing platform, which can provide you with one-stop service of different kinds of honey authenticity testing services.

Honey is one of the most adulterated foods in the world. The adulteration of honey has become more refined and adulterated, and the methods of adulteration have become more sophisticated, bringing severe challenges to the detection of honey authenticity. Honey adulteration is divided into direct adulteration and indirect adulteration. Direct adulteration is the addition of foreign substances to honey, while indirect adulteration is the feeding of industrial syrup to bees during their natural spawning stage. The regulations and control measures for honey authenticity testing vary from country to country and have not yet been unified.

Honey Authenticity Test Items in Alfa Chemistry

  • Detect the addition of exogenous sugar (from multiple sources: sugarcane, corn, sugar beet, wheat, rice, etc.): a. Detect whether honey is mixed with C4, C3 plant high fructose syrup; b. Detect whether honey is mixed with starch-based syrup, rice syrup, etc.
  • Detection of foreign enzyme addition: Such as beta and gamma amylases, beta-fructofuranosidase, heat-stable thermoresistant alpha-amylase and foreign alpha-amylases, etc.
  • Detect ingredient indicators in honey: glucose, sucrose, fructose, moisture, carboxymethyl furfural, acidity, amylase activity, etc.
  • Detect whether caramel color is added to honey.
  • Confirm the floral origin of honey declared on the product's packaging.

Honey Authenticity Testing Platform

  • High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC): Detect whether there are other exogenous syrups in honey.
  • Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS): Detect sugar components in honey or syrup, and then discover characteristic components in syrup. Provide basis for honey adulteration identification.
  • Liquid chromatography-electrospray mass spectrometry (LC / ESI-MS / MS): Comprehensive honey authenticity component identification, suitable for multiple detection purposes.
  • Stable carbon isotope ratio method (SCIRA): C4 plant sugar content detection
  • High resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR): Detects known and unknown adulteration as well as unauthorized honey processing and other treatments. Provides a wide range of targeted (quantified defined substances) and non-targeted (identifying deviations from the reference spectrum) information.
  • Near infrared absorption spectroscopy (NIR): Detect the internal quality of honey. Determine whether it is adulterated. Identify the origin and plant source of honey.
  • Liquid chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (LC-IRMS): Determine the isotope ratio of fructose, glucose, disaccharide, trisaccharide, etc. in honey, and also determine the residual amount of γ-amylase in honey.

Turnaround Time: 7-10 working days.
