Beta-agonists (β-agonists) are a class of phenylethanolamine synthetic compounds with adrenaline function, and all have the nucleus of phenylethanolamine in structure.

When the dosage of β-agonist drugs exceeds the therapeutic dose by 5 to 10 times, it can promote the redistribution of nutrients in cattle, pigs, sheep, poultry and other farmed animals. It can increase fat catabolism and protein synthesis in animals, significantly increase the lean meat rate of the carcass, and improve the daily weight gain and feed conversion rate of breeding animals. However, the wrong application of high-dose β-agonist drugs is likely to remain in the tissues of edible animals. When the cumulative dose in the human body exceeds a certain value or eats the visceral tissue with high residue (100 ng/g), the toxic side effects of β-agonists are prone to occur.

In the United States, rationally used β-agonists have been approved by the FDA for use in cattle, which can increase the efficiency of beef production by increasing muscle growth. The European Union bans all β-receptor agonists used for animal growth promotion, and only allows clenbuterol hydrochloride to be used for therapeutic effects. At the same time, in order to protect the interests of consumers, EU officials have also established maximum residue limits (MRLs). The MRL in cattle or horse meat is 0.1 μg/kg; the MRL in internal organs (liver and kidney) of cattle or horses is 0.5 μg/kg; the MRL of clenbuterol in milk is 0.05 μg/kg.

• ELISA

Antigens or antibodies can be linked to enzymes by covalent bonds to form enzyme conjugates. After the enzyme conjugate is bound to the corresponding antigen or antibody, the color reaction of the added substrate can be used to determine whether there is an immune response. The intensity of the color response is directly proportional to the amount of the corresponding antigen or antibody in the specimen. Enzymatically hydrolyze the remaining β-agonist in the sample. Adjust the pH value with perchloric acid solution. The protein is precipitated and then centrifuged. The supernatant is purified by electrospray ionization, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and quantified by internal standard method.
