Textile Finishing
INQUIRY

Textile finishing refers to the processing used to improve the appearance, feel, and dimensional stability of fabrics after printing and dyeing to enhance the value of textile end products through various mechanical and chemical finishing methods. Textile finishing gives fabrics new properties, such as flame resistance, water resistance, mildew resistance, moth resistance, UV resistance, wrinkle resistance, and easy decontamination.

As an environmentally friendly auxiliary, cyclodextrin (CD) also plays an important role in textile finishing, endowing several functional properties to textiles.

CD-Based Finishing Method

CD-Based Finishing Method

Grafting CD onto textile fibers is the most common textile finishing method. It refers to CD permanently fixed to fabric fibers through a certain method, and then includes various guest molecules as needed. There are two common methods of grafting to fibers: (a) Modify the CD to prepare a CD derivative with an active group, then cross-link it with the fabric fiber to graft the CD to the fiber; (b) Modify the fabric fiber first by grafting some groups that can react with CD, and then react with CD.

For different fibers, the grafting methods are different. But no matter what, after being permanently fixed to the fabric through covalent bonds, CD and its derivatives can still retain the ability to form host-guest complexes with guest substances. With this CD-based finishing method, textiles can be developed with functions such as fragrance preservation, deodorization, ultraviolet (UV) absorption, and sterilization.

CD-Based Finishing Types

CD can be used for many types of textile finishing, such as aromatic, anti-odor, and anti-UV finishing, with different textile finishing methods giving different functions to the textiles.

Aromatic finishing

Aromatic finishing

CD can form inclusion complexes with aromatic finishing agents such as fragrance. After these complexes are fixed to the fabric, they effectively improve the heat resistance of fragrance, reduce the volatility of fragrance, and even achieve controlled release of fragrance. Therefore, CD can be used to extend the lasting time of fragrance during aromatic finishing, which facilitates making functional aromatic textiles.

Anti-odor finishing

Anti-odor finishing

CD still has encapsulation ability after being grafted onto fabrics, and can encapsulate components of some undesired odor. Some fabrics after anti-odor finishing are grafted with CD, and curtains and car seat cushions made of these fabrics can absorb nicotine from the air. In addition, some fabrics can also reduce the release of unpleasant odors by encapsulating certain components of sweat through CD after anti-odor finishing.

Anti-UV finishing

Anti-UV finishing

CD has also been used to a certain extent in anti-UV finishing. It can encapsulate UV absorbers to make the fabric have a long-lasting UV protection effect, which may prevent the occurrence of skin tumors. In the textile industry, after anti-UV finishing, anti-UV clothing, tents and sun umbrellas made of CD-UV absorber inclusion complexes have been gradually applied.

CD can also be used in antimicrobial and anti-mosquito finishing. It can encapsulate fungicides to make the fabric antimicrobial and prevent the growth of mold. In addition, it can also encapsulate mosquito repellent molecules, increasing their water solubility, stability, and sustained release. The mosquito repellent textiles prepared after CD-based anti-mosquito finishing are possible to achieve the ideal anti-mosquito effect.
