Cyclodextrins are enzyme modified starch derivatives. They are cyclic oligosaccharides composed of glucose units linked with α-1,4 glycosidic bonds. The chiral glucose units are in a rigid chair conformation, making the cyclodextrin molecule shaped like a hollow truncated cone with secondary hydroxyl groups on the wider rim and primary hydroxyl groups on the narrower rim. To date, a variety of cyclodextrin compounds have been developed, which can be divided into two categories: modified cyclodextrins and cyclodextrin inclusion complexes.

Services
  • Modified cyclodextrin: Modified cyclodextrins, also known as cyclodextrin derivatives, are obtained by introducing substituents into the basic skeleton of the macrocycle of the parent cyclodextrin. Theoretically, cyclodextrin can undergo a variety of reactions, and O-H, C-H, C-O and C-C bonds can all be broken. There are various types of cyclodextrin derivatives, which may have different substitution sites, different types of substituents, and different average degrees of substitution (DS).
  • Cyclodextrin inclusion complexes: Due to its unique structure, cyclodextrin can encapsulate hydrophobic molecules within its cavity and form host-guest inclusion complexes with guest molecules driven by electrostatic, van der Waals interactions, and hydrogen bonding [1]. There are various types of cyclodextrin inclusion complexes, which can include guest molecules of different sizes and types according to their different cavity structures.

These cyclodextrin compounds exhibit different inclusion capacities and physicochemical properties and can be characterized by a variety of analytical methods, thus facilitating the development of their applications.
