Product Description

The glycyrrhizin-cyclodextrin-complex is a combination formed between glycyrrhizin and cyclodextrin. Glycyrrhizin, an isoflavonoid compound unique to Glycyrrhiza glabra, exhibits various biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, hypoglycemic, and neuroprotective effects. However, the bioavailability of glycyrrhizin is notably low, primarily due to its poor solubility. Cyclodextrins possess a unique cage-like structure that is hydrophilic on the outside and hydrophobic on the inside, allowing them to interact with various compounds through non-covalent forces such as electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces. This interaction is particularly effective with hydrophobic compounds, which can be encapsulated within the cyclodextrins' cavities to form host-guest inclusion complexes. As a result, the solubility of poorly soluble compounds is enhanced. The glycyrrhizin-cyclodextrin-complex improves the stability of glycyrrhizin and enhances its solubility in water at room temperature. It retains the same functional properties as the raw compound, such as inhibiting tyrosinase activity and preventing melanin formation in the skin. Due to these properties, this complex is often referred to as the "whitening gold" within the cosmetic industry.

Applications

  • Whitening cosmetics. The complex is often used in cosmetic formulations to inhibit tyrosinase activity, reducing melanin production and promoting a brighter skin tone.
  • Anti-aging products. Thanks to its antioxidant properties, glycyrrhizin-cyclodextrin-complex helps in minimizing oxidative stress on the skin, thereby reducing signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles.
