Product Description

Cyclodextrins are cyclic oligosaccharides formed by the linkage of glucose units through α-1,4-glycosidic bonds. Their distinct architecture, featuring a hydrophobic cavity and a hydrophilic outer surface, provides a wealth of opportunities for functionalizing hydrogels. Cyclodextrin hydrogels are three-dimensional network materials constructed based on cyclodextrins. They are typically prepared by cross-linking cyclodextrin molecules with natural polymers like gelatin, chitosan, and alginate, or synthetic polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylamide. These hydrogels exhibit excellent biocompatibility, superior water absorption, and molecular recognition capability, further enhancing their applicability in diverse scientific and industrial applications. Furthermore, cyclodextrin hydrogels can be designed for specific applications.

Characteristics

  • Excellent biocompatibility. Cyclodextrin hydrogels are renowned for their excellent biocompatibility. They are non-toxic and biodegradable, making them highly suitable for applications in the biomedical field. This property ensures that they can be safely used in drug delivery systems.
  • Molecular recognition capability. One of the standout features of cyclodextrin hydrogels is their ability to selectively encapsulate hydrophobic small molecules, such as pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and environmental pollutants. This capability enhances the solubility and stability of these compounds, facilitating their controlled release and improving their effectiveness in various applications.
  • Versatile functionalization. The hydroxyl groups present on cyclodextrin molecules offer extensive opportunities for chemical modification and grafting. This allows cyclodextrins to be combined with different polymers or cross-linking agents to construct composite hydrogels with tailored properties, meeting the specific demands of diverse industrial and research applications.
  • Superior water absorption. Cyclodextrin hydrogels also possess high water absorption, capable of absorbing and fixing large amounts of water.

Applications

Cyclodextrin hydrogels combine the unique properties of cyclodextrin and hydrogels, enabling the encapsulation and controlled release of various molecules, thus finding wide application in drug delivery, tissue repair, environmental remediation, and smart materials.

  • Drug delivery. Cyclodextrin hydrogels can encapsulate poorly soluble drugs, improving their bioavailability and enabling sustained drug release. This encapsulation allows for higher drug loading efficiency and prolonged therapeutic effects, making them ideal for drug delivery systems.
  • Tissue repair. Cyclodextrin hydrogels are capable of delivering growth factors or antimicrobial agents, making them valuable in promoting wound healing and tissue repair. Their biocompatible and biodegradable nature ensures that they can support cell growth and regeneration while minimizing the risk of infection, thereby facilitating faster recovery processes.
  • Environmental remediation. Cyclodextrin hydrogels exhibit exceptional performance in environmental remediation by selectively encapsulating organic pollutants. This selective inclusion makes them particularly effective for removing harmful compounds from water bodies, contributing to improved water quality and environmental health.
  • Smart materials. By incorporating photosensitive or pH-sensitive molecules, cyclodextrin hydrogels can be developed into smart responsive hydrogels. These advanced materials can release drugs on-demand in response to specific environmental stimuli, offering innovative solutions for targeted and controlled therapeutic applications.
