2-Thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTFA) serves multiple purposes as a versatile chemical compound. Primarily, it acts as an inhibitor of mitochondrial respiration by binding to the quinone reduction sites in succinate:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (Complex II), thus blocking the respiratory chain and affecting cellular respiration in animals. This action results in a delay in cell cycle progression and induces oxidative stress. Additionally, TTFA inhibits NADH fumarate reductase in bacteria as well as photosystem II in plants. Beyond these biological interactions, TTFA functions as an effective chelator for various metals, including lanthanum, zirconium, hafnium, and neodymium. It is widely used in solvent extraction analyses for the separation and enrichment of metal ions and serves as a reagent in the determination of actinides and lanthanides. Moreover, its potential in extractive spectrophotometric determination, such as for ruthenium in acetate buffer at pH 4.0, adds to its applicability. As an alternative β-diketone, TTFA has been beneficial in assay development, especially when other compounds are unavailable.
