Sodium Carbonate Monohydrate serves multiple purposes, primarily recognized for its role in pH buffering and adjustment. As a versatile white powder, it is employed in various applications ranging from mineral processing to pharmaceutical formulations. In mineral processing, its ability to maintain a stable pH-shifting only slightly from 10.5 to 11.7 even with significant changes in concentration-makes it ideal for pH control. Additionally, it is integral in injectable, ophthalmic, oral, and rectal formulations as an alkalizing agent, with typical concentrations ranging from 2% to 5% w/w. Its use extends to effervescent tablets, where it reacts with acids like citric or tartaric to produce carbon dioxide, aiding disintegration. For this purpose, concentrations can reach up to 10% w/w. Beyond its buffering capacity, Sodium Carbonate Monohydrate is also utilized for sterilization and virus inactivation, as well as in the removal of peripheral membrane proteins. Its therapeutic applications include serving as an oral antacid.
