Application
Silicon carbide is primarily designed for use in abrasive and refractory applications due to its exceptional hardness and thermal properties. It is manufactured through the carbothermal reduction of silica, resulting in a light grey powder or bluish-black, iridescent crystals. Notably insoluble in water and alcohol, silicon carbide dissolves in fused alkalies and molten iron. This material excels in thermal conductivity and is electrically conductive, resisting oxidation at high temperatures while being noncombustible. Its fabrication involves heating silica sand and petroleum coke at temperatures exceeding 2200°C, leading to a product that is highly resistant to abrasion, corrosion, and thermal spalling. Despite its robust nature, silicon carbide oxidizes readily, necessitating careful handling. The substance is versatile, with hundreds of polytypes identified, ranging from diamond-like structures to hexagonal and rhombic forms, all contributing to different industrial applications. Its unique properties make silicon carbide highly suitable for constructing self-bonded, impermeable refractories that withstand corrosive environments, offering impactful solutions in the manufacture of abrasives, brake linings, heating elements, and thermistors.
