Application
Rose Bengal, 90%, indicator, is a versatile xanthene dye known for its unique properties as a fluorescein derivative and photosensitizer. It is primarily utilized for research purposes, offering significant applications in photodynamic and sonodynamic therapies. With absorption and emission maxima at 548 and 567 nm, respectively, Rose Bengal effectively binds to S. aureus cells, drastically reducing their survival upon photoirradiation. It serves as a potent generator of singlet oxygen, facilitating cell-free assays and inducing potassium ion leakage in both bacterial and erythrocyte contexts under photoirradiation. Furthermore, Rose Bengal inhibits key enzymes, such as cytochrome P450 (CYP) and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT), in a light-dependent manner, highlighting its role in molecular studies involving human liver microsomes. Despite its utility in cell staining, users should be mindful of its intrinsic and phototoxic characteristics. Available as a bordeaux-red to red-brown crystalline powder, it is intended solely for research use and must not be used in diagnostic procedures.
