Lanthanum(III) chloride serves as a versatile, non-homogeneous catalyst extensively utilized in various organic reactions and transformations. Its applications include the solvent-free synthesis of substituted olefins via the Knoevenagel condensation method and the one-pot production of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones. Moreover, it acts as a precursor for synthesizing lanthanum and vanadium co-doped TiO₂ nanoparticles. Available as a white powder or colorless crystals, lanthanum(III) chloride is essential in preparing other lanthanum salts and producing lanthanum metal. It also serves as a catalyst in processes such as high-pressure oxidative chlorination of methane to chloromethane, and, in organic synthesis, functions as a Lewis acid to convert aldehydes to acetals.
