Iron(II,III) Oxide

Application

Iron(II,III) Oxide serves multiple purposes due to its chemical composition and properties. With its black mineral appearance and strong magnetic attraction, it contains 72.4% iron and is soluble in hydrochloric acid in powder form. This oxide decomposes at 1538°C to form ferric oxide (Fe2O3). As a synthetic inorganic pigment, it is produced by oxidizing iron (II) hydroxide, which is derived from the reaction of alkali with iron (II) sulfate solution. Its composition matches that of magnetite, and it is known for its fine texture. Though it has low tinting strength, it is primarily utilized as a colorant in fillers, primers, and undercoats in the paint industry, where black pigments are crucial, alongside carbon blacks. Additionally, Iron(II,III) Oxide is used as a diagnostic aid in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and in the treatment of iron deficiency.
